High velocity deposition of a feedstock material
The process of thermal/metal spraying involves heating the spray feedstock (in powder or wire form) to a molten or semi-molten state. It is then propelled onto the surface of the target material at high velocity using a stream of gas or compressed air. A layer of the feedstock material is deposited on the surface of the target material, a process that can be repeated many times as the technician builds a series of layers.
