Avoid expensive shaft removal and replacement

When engineering bearings fail, they usually damage the shaft too. Whilst it's relatively easy to install new bearings, shafts are usually much harder and more costly to replace. First, there's the time and expense involved during removal. Then the damaged part must be transported to a repair workshop before even more time and money is used up before the shaft is replaced. It all adds up to high costs, not least of the lost production while plant stands idle or a ship waits in port.

Fortunately, when you choose Metalock India, based in Kolkata, there's a cost-effective and much easier way.

Cost-effective in situ repairs

Reduce the cost of a damaged shaft with cost-effective, high quality in situ repairs that help you avoid costly downtime and get your plant (or an expensive ship) earning money again. All we need from you are a few important engineering details:

  • A datum point against which we can set our equipment.
  • The parent metal specification, so we can determine which welding or thermal spray procedure to use.
  • A detailed engineering drawing of the damaged part.

Typical repair methods

During the repair, the shaft remains static while the tool rotates around the damaged shaft. Depending on the required repair, we'll probably use one of these methods:

  • Orbital machining with superfinishing (often used for large marine crankshafts).
  • Orbital machining/shrink-on-sleeve/final orbital machine.
  • Orbital machining/orbital welding/final orbital machining.
  • Orbital machining/metal spraying/final orbital machining.

(We can also make similar repairs in reverse on worn bore locations using our in-situ boring equipment.)

In situ repairs save you precious time and money

These techniques are also suitable for repairing worn or damaged bore locations using our in-situ welding and boring equipment. It's a versatile service offering several advantages over traditional repair procedures

  • A fast, money-saving repair.
  • Lower removal, transport and shaft replacement costs.
  • Less costly downtime.
